What size air compressor do I need?

Choosing the right size air compressor depends on your specific application, air demand and operating conditions. Selecting a compressor that is too small can lead to pressure drops and inefficiency, while an oversized system can unnecessarily increase energy costs.

At Avelair, we recommend sizing your compressor based on the following key factors:

Air flow (CFM or m³/min) – calculate the total air consumption of all tools and equipment that will run simultaneously

Operating pressure (bar or psi) – ensure the compressor can consistently meet your highest pressure requirement

Duty cycle – consider how often and how long the compressor will run throughout the day

Future expansion – allow capacity for additional equipment or increased demand

Application type – different industries and processes have varying air requirements

As a general rule, it’s best to size your compressor slightly above your current demand to maintain efficiency and avoid overloading the system.

In many cases, a variable speed drive (VSD) compressor can offer greater flexibility, automatically adjusting output to match demand and improving energy efficiency.
