As production increases, compressed air demand can quickly change. For one specialist manufacturer, continued growth meant their existing compressed air system needed to be reviewed to ensure it could deliver the additional air required without creating unnecessary energy costs.
The customer was operating an 18.5kW fixed speed compressor. Before recommending an upgrade, Avelair’s specialist team carried out detailed data logging of the existing compressed air system to understand actual air demand, running patterns and energy consumption.
The results showed a clear opportunity to improve efficiency while also increasing available compressed air capacity.
From Fixed Speed to Variable Speed
Following the data logging exercise, we recommended replacing the existing 18.5kW fixed speed compressor with an Avelair VSD 22 variable speed air compressor.
The VSD 22 uses variable speed drive technology to automatically adjust its output to match the actual compressed air demand.
Rather than running at full output regardless of requirement, the compressor increases and decreases its speed as demand changes. This helps reduce wasted energy and allows the compressor to operate more efficiently across varying production loads.
Our data logging also demonstrated the expected energy savings and payback period, giving the customer clear information to support their investment decision.
Supporting Continued Growth
The move to the 22kW VSD air compressor also provided the customer with additional compressed air capacity to support increasing production.
As the business continued to expand, a second VSD 22 was later installed alongside the first.
This gives the site greater flexibility, increased available air and valuable redundancy. If one compressor is unavailable for servicing or maintenance, the second machine can continue supplying compressed air and help reduce the risk of production downtime.
The plug and play nature of the system also made it straightforward to expand the installation as the customer’s requirements increased.

Energy efficiency remains central to the installation. By matching compressor output more closely to actual demand, the system can help control electricity consumption as production grows.
