How to work out the airflow requirement

Airflow requirement is measured in cubic feet per minute (and is referred to as CFM).

Check the equipment specifications

First, review what tools or equipment will be powered by the air compressor and then check what the specifications of the tools are. The easiest and most accurate way is to refer to the manufacturer’s specifications, which can be found in the product manual or on the manufacturer’s website.

The airflow requirement will show how much air the equipment consumes when operating at the recommended pressure (PSI).

Work out the CFM if using multiple equipment

If you intend to use more than one tool at any one time, you will need to add the individual CFM values together to arrive at the total airflow requirement.

If the tools won’t be used at the same time take the highest CFM requirement among the tools.

Pressure required (PSI)

Whilst reviewing the manufacturer’s product guide identify what the required pressure is for the equipment which will be shown in pounds per square inch (PSI) This figure will vary depending on what the specific application is.
