Avelair has supported Denny Bros for over 15 years at its Suffolk production facility. As part of the company’s ongoing drive towards greater sustainability and energy efficiency, two older fixed speed compressors were replaced with a latest-generation Variable Speed Drive (VSD) Avelair compressor.
The challenge
Denny Bros is widely recognised for its environmental leadership, with:
- Carbon footprint reduced by 65% in less than fifteen years
- ISO 14001:2015 certification for Environmental Management Systems
- Carbon Charter Gold accreditation
As part of its continuous improvement strategy, the business reviewed the efficiency of its existing compressed air system. Although reliable, the two fixed speed compressors were less efficient under variable demand conditions and presented an opportunity for further carbon reduction.
The plant location presented an additional logistical challenge, as the compressors were installed on the factory roof.
The solution – High-efficiency VSD technology
Following a comprehensive energy survey by Avelair, it was recommended that the two fixed speed compressors be replaced with a new high-efficiency VSD rotary screw air compressor.
Key elements of the project:
- British-built Avelair VSD air compressor
- Integrated inverter drive to match motor speed to real-time air demand
- Roof-top crane installation, coordinated with Crowland Cranes
- Safe removal of the two older units
Unlike fixed speed compressors, which continue to consume energy when running off load, the VSD compressor ramps motor speed up or down depending on demand. This ensures optimum efficiency and significantly reduces wasted electricity.
